Learning to Play the Drums With the Beatles Rock Band Video Game |
I understand if this sounds like an insane idea to you but hear me out on this one. I've had this game for almost two weeks now and I'm amazed at the power of the "Drum Trainer" part of the game and the practice mode when drumming on The Beatles songs that lets you play a specific part of the song over and over again until you get it just right. Drum Lessons Over 40 different drum lessons are included. You can play at a tempo as slow as 60 and as fast as 200. A great thing is that the game drums correspond to specific drums in real life. There's one game drum for snare hits, there's one for hi-hat hits, there's one for toms, and there's one for crashes. This lets you really get into the "feel" of the music rather than worrying so much about what color is coming at you on the screen. Beatle Beats Over 80 of Ringo's beats from The Beatles songs are isolated in this feature. This lets you really focus on the drums and lets you practice and practice until you get it perfect. You can play them slowly to get the hang of them and then speed up until you are playing them at their original tempo. Freestyle Mode Another feature I think is really cool (a feature that is new to The Beatles version of Rock Band) is "freestyle mode." This lets you just play the drums on your own. It really works as a pretty basic electronic drum set. No, there's no velocity so it's not really realistic - but it does let you practice on your own in a basic way. "Expert Mode" I recommend skipping the other modes when you are playing The Beatles songs and skip right to "Expert Mode" even if you are a beginner. Why? Because with expert mode you are playing all of the real beats in the song and that's what you should be learning. The easier modes leave out some of the beats which I think makes it a more confusing. It makes it more of a video game and less practice for learning to become a real good drummer. Playing Real Drums I've read many stories of people learning to play the drums on Rock Band and then moving onto playing real drums with little difficulty. I think that transition will be easier than ever before with The Beatles Rock Band because it's particularly well suited to teaching people how to play the drums.
